Vision

The Central Institute of Education (CIE) was envisioned with the teachings of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore- “Let a lamp kindle another lamp.” It was one of the first significant institutions of professional learning and research in Education established immediately after independence. The teacher and student community of CIE aim to engage in the quest for knowledge and develop democratic and inclusive spaces of learning through many academic and professional programmes. The institute seeks to create an educated and enlightened society by nurturing reflective educators for different levels of education. It brings together students from different streams of education and various parts of the country and the globe. CIE envisages a unique philosophy, which finds reflection in all its programmes through inculcating core values of equality, freedom, dedication to the nation, creativity, social responsibility, collaborative and experiential learning, innovation and excellence.

Mission

Just as a lamp can only light another lamp when it continues to burn in its own flame, CIE continues to play a crucial role in spreading the light of knowledge through its pre-service and in-service teacher education programs along with rigorous research and critical discussions on the emerging educational issues and enhancement of professional competencies. The major thrust has been preparing a cadre of professionals to assume roles as teachers and administrators at the school level, university faculty members, senior-level educational leaders, professional practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. In addition, it contributes to society through its components of field visits across its teacher education courses and a caring CIE Experimental Basic School.
